He Weeps/Thoughts

Where is God, when we're suffering?

That's a question I have been asking throughout my life, but especially right now. Where is He, when we need Him most, but we can't feel, see, or hear Him? Where is He, when our lives have gone beyond shattered? What is He doing when we're dealing with the hardest things in life, or with the worst pain?

I watched a movie called, "Sarah's Key", a while back. It's about a Jewish girl, during Nazi Germany. I also just watched a remake of "The Diary of Anne Frank", another Jewish girl and her family during WWII.

If you've read or watched anything about WWII or Nazi Germany, you know that those stories are not unique...there were far too many lives taken. In my mind, they raised the question of where He is while so much destruction is happening, and so many lives are lost, stolen, consumed by something too powerful for us alone to stop.

But then I remember, He says He will never leave us, nor forsake us. (Deut. 31:6, 8) So, if He is still with us, why doesn't He just step in, and stop all the suffering, heartbreak, tears, pain, destruction?  If He were to step in, He would contradict our free-will. He would need to remake everything, a new Heaven and new Earth for us to never feel that pain again. He's promised to do that already, so where does that leave us now?

What if He uses those most painful events in our lives...for our good? You may misunderstand what I'm saying here...I'm not suggesting He makes those bad things happen, only that He turns them around for the good of those who love and trust Him. (Romans 8:28) What if He is more concerned with our holiness than our comfort?

Even as I write this, I'm thinking of the consequences of what I'm saying. How could our loving and just God possibly use the Holocaust, the death of millions of people, the personal pain, whatever the circumstances might be, for our good?

Think of this: Israel would not have been born, if they had not been rejected from every other place on earth. If the Jews had any hiding place left, they would not have pushed so hard to regain their homeland. If Nazi Germany had not torn through nearly all of Europe, the Jews would not have Israel, they would be Austrian, German, French, ect. Israel would not exist.

At the high cost of six million precious lives, in Europe alone, Israel was brought like gold from the ashes. Does this in anyway ease my anger toward what happened and how the world, my own country, treated them? Not at all. Does it somehow dismiss the fact that millions of people were torn apart? Never. But it does show how God can use the most terrible things for ulimate good.

When I look at all the statistics, my heart breaks, and then angrily ask God where He was when all of this happened. But when He takes me into the personal stories of people during that time, He shows me the calling, blessing, guidance, protection and miraculous in their stories.

Then it dawns on me...we need a new perspective when we're faced with difficulties. What if we were to dare to take each difficulty as a challenge to grow? What if we are meant to trust, be patient, and wait joyfully, doing whatever God sets in our path? Can we trust Him to work it out in time?

I, in no way, want to diminish whatever you're going through. I have been through hard things too...I know how painful it can be. But, what if when we trust Him, our pain fades? Maybe not immediately, but it will, no doubt, lessen when we ask God to carry the burden.

There is a song I have heard recently, and every time, it touches my heart again to remind me that our God is compassionate on us. I'll put the lyrics below, and I highly recomend you find this song.

Feel free to leave comments below. I know this may be a highly sensitive topic, so please be gentle and understanding.

Love in Christ,
Shae

Where is God when the rain falls?
And takes the car off the road?
Is He standing in the storm?
Where is God when the child cries?
And no one bends to pick her up?
Could someone tell me what He does?

(Chorus)
He weeps, He weeps with you
He weeps with me
When I'm on my knees
And I taste defeat
He weeps, He weeps

Where is God when she won't eat?
When her bones start to show?
Is He there when she's lost control?
Where is God when a father?
Turns his back on his son?
Can someone tell me what He does?

Chorus

If today's your darkest day
And you can't escape the pain
Don't be afraid
He will never walk away

Chorus (X2)

Your blog gives me much to ponder. I especially love this sentence... "What if He is more concerned with our holiness than our comfort?"
